Rules for Dimensions

The official size of a passport photo is 2 inches by 2 inches (width by height).

Rules for Photo Quality

The photo should closely resemble the applicant and provide a sharp, natural representation. Sufficient contrast and facial detail should be visible, with the facial color appearing natural.

Rules for Background

The background color should be white or off-white. The photo's background must be smooth, uniform, and free from gradients or shadows.

Rules for Face Display

The face should be fully visible, with no obstructions covering the face or eyes. Hair that falls over the eyes or hinders the full visibility of the face may impede (automated) facial recognition.

Rules for Posture

The head and shoulders should be presented facing directly forward. Tilting the head in any direction (backward, forward, sideways) may cause issues with (automated) facial recognition.

To ensure successful facial recognition, the applicant must look directly into the camera with a neutral expression and a closed mouth.

Rules for Glasses

If wearing glasses, the eyes must be fully visible in the photo. This means that the frame and/or lenses should not obstruct the eyes in any way.

Rules for Lighting

The lighting should be evenly distributed, both on the face and the background. Underexposure, overexposure, and reflections should be avoided.

The person in the photo should be centered within the frame, with the head fully displayed.
