A fingerprint, also known as a dermatoglyph, is the imprint of the ridge pattern on a fingertip left by the natural layer of fat on the skin. The lines on each finger are unique and can therefore be used as an identification tool.
Fingerprints are well-known because law enforcement agencies use them to track down perpetrators.
When applying for a passport in United States, you are required to provide a fingerprint. This is not necessary for an identity card, which can be issued without a fingerprint. The fingerprint and passport photo are stored in the chip of the passport.
It is mandatory to carry a valid identification document at all times. Everyone over the age of 14 must be able to present it when requested by the police.
